Dr Nigel Agar, Labour member of the Herts County Council for Letchworth North-west retired from North Herts College in 1992. He is a historian and his book ‘Behind the Plough’, a history of the rural society of Hertfordshire in the nineteenth century, was published by the University of Hertfordshire Press in 2005. He served on the North Herts District Council from 1991 to 2002 specialising on the planning side of local council work. On Hertfordshire County Council, he is countryside representative for the Labour group and also serves on panels concerned with libraries and public information. He is currently a Hertfordshire member of the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and serves on the Beds and Ivel Internal Drainage Board. Interested in nature conservation, he is a member of the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife trust and serves as warden of two nature reserves in the Chilterns AONB at Hexton Chalk Pits and Telegraph Hill. He is married with three grown-up children.
